Description
The usual garden form of horticulture and an excellent plant for the peat garden where it makes 20-40 cm tall stems densely clothed in shiny, whorled leaves. These are crowned by a cluster of deepest purple, almost black, flowers with contrasting yellow anthers. Fritillaria camschatcensis is one of the latest Fritillaria to flower, usually in May with us.
Native to the colder regions of both the USA (in Alaska), Japan and the very north east of Russia and Kamchatka. This is a very good, vigorous, hardy garden plant for sun or a slightly shaded, damp to seasonally wet, humus-rich soil. This will take both sun and shade, but in sun it likes to be wetter at the roots, in shade it appreciates less water.
