Description

Eros is a lovely new clone of F. meleagris of very distinctive colouring. It opens with quite a pale flower colour which is greyish-green and white, with the petal edges picked out in pink. Over the course of a few days the stem elongates and the plant becomes taller whilst the flower darkens to a more uniform, but still chequered pale pink with grey-white chequering. The area around the nectary stains to darker, bottle green and the bell elongates slightly. Eros frequently has two flowers per stem.

Though it was raised and named by Antoine Hoog, we have grown this here for several years prior to its christening and we do find that the colouring varies slightly from year to year. All of the plants in a clump behave the same way each year, but some years it is noticeably whiter, some years it is much pinker, we assume this to be temperature-related, but other than dated photographs that confirm the colour “change” I have only subjective evidence to confirm why it happens. However the same yearly variation occurs both in our stock bed and in a small clump in the garden. The latter has remained undisturbed since its first planting.

A firm favourite here and distinct from anything in the trade so far.
