Description
(Galanthus elwesii Penelope Ann)
A quite new, and correspondingly still scarce, selection of G. elwesii.
It has long outers which are slightly rolled in on themselves to give a narrower appearance to what is actually quite a large and striking flower. The rolling also makes the tips of the outers appear sharpened and pointed.
The segments of inner whorl are almost completely covered with a large, deep green apical blotch in the shape of a broad “X” with very fat arms. This extends most of the way up each of the (inner) petals. The whole flower is held on quite a long and arching pedicel, a little reminiscent of Galanthus Magnet.
Below the flowers the foliage is grey, glaucous and very decorative in the manner of most of the elwesii forms and hybrids. Large, bold, desirable this both flowers and increases well.
This originated with and is named in honour and memory of Penelope Ann Borrill (nee Smyth). She in turn is reported to have got from Colin Mason in the 1990s when it was said to be a “seed raised G. caucasicus {as it would then have been called} with all green inners”.
