Description
A reliably perennial, South African, summer-dormant species with (in our form) pale pink flowers heavily marked and patterned with a deep red-purple shade. This makes a super display in spring and soon clumps, without ever being a weed. The stiff spikes can reach 40-50cm tall with between 3 and 10 flowers in each. Give a well-drained but fertile loam soil in full sun and allow top dry off, or lift, in summer once they are dormant, replanting or re-watering (depending on your cultivation method) in autumn. Feeding makes larger corms and, in turn, more flowers.
This is a lovely and vigorous “clean” stock i.e. virus-free, unlike most of the commercially produced ‘cheap and cheerful’ garden-centre stocks originating largely in the Netherlands. The stock offered is exactly the stock shown in our illustrations.
