Description
This unique plant has succulent, channelled leaves with red bars across their bases. The flower head, borne on a red spotted stem, has deep crimson bracts surrounding an upright cluster of flame-red flowers each of which has contrasting yellow anthers. The bulb is loose and open and in time makes clumps.
Discovered in 1943 after a fire at its only locality, it was not until 1960 that its existence was confirmed, after another fire. In cultivation it flowers every year !
This is a very rare plant, known only from one small area in the wild. It is readily grown in a sandy, leafy soil in light shade and it is very attractive.
