Description

Loosely packed bulbs that make small clumps in time, each one producing two strappy, soft, bright green leaves covered in long soft white hairs. These long hairs are sometimes repeated on the stem that bears the flower head.

Individual flowers are scarlet (rarely) to coral (usually) and up to 50 are packed into a dense head which is surrounded with 5 or 6 spathes of brilliant red or coral.

This is a rare inhabitant of a handful of localities in the mountains south west of Kliprand in Namaqualand. There it occurs on shale outcrops in a winter rainfall area. Known since 1926 but only named in 1984.
