Description

Prostrate flattened smooth, slightly glaucous leaves fringed with fine white hairs. The bracts around the flowers (which lend so much to the beauty of Haemanthus) are bright crimson and fleshy, and are the largest in the genus. The clustered flowers in the centre are of the same crimson with the anthers picked out in yellow.

A rare native of a small area spanning the arid coastal plains of Namibia and Namaqualand around the evocatively named Olifants river, where it grows in wind blown sand accompanied by succulents. Here it grows happily in silver sand containing 5% leafmould.
