Description

For a very long time the Sandan forms have been both rare and expensive. This is especially true of the “blue” Sandans, in which a broad outer frill is purple or blue-tinged with a contrast to the green inner frill of petalloid anthers on short filaments. The form shown on moss, in the gallery pictrures, illustrates the typical Sandan structure beautifully.

When we first grew this, many years ago, we were lucky to get some seed-raised plants from a Japanese breeder. These came from one of the best, named forms but were seedlings and thus not entitled to the clonal name of the parent. There was however only a little variation and all were of the blue Sandan type. A few plants were retained and grown on. Our best plant has been grown on and divided and from 2018 we have offered only clonal divisions of this one plant retained from the original seed-raised batch. The plants offered are the exact plants shown in the main picture and first gallery picture. The third of the gallery pictures (on moss) show one of its siblings (which we are not offering).
