Description

(nobilis x transsilvanica)

The two species Hepatica nobilis and Hepatica transsilvanica do actually meet in the wild in a few areas, but they have been extensively inter-pollinated for a couple of hundred years in cultivation, so that now, many named forms exist, some better than others.

One of the most outstanding is this one, Millstream Merlin, with superb, deeply-coloured, rich-blue flowers each with a central, green eye. The central button is tightly-packed, green and totally sterile, giving a most attractive appearance.

My favourite selection of Hepatica x media  originally raised, or spotted in the USA by Lincoln Foster, or if you believe alternative stories, then it occurred as a chance seedling in his “Millstream” garden which was subsequently selected and propagated. I am not certain, which, if any of this is correct.
