Description
We accidentally attached the JJA.590.625 number to Iris lineolata (a different species) in our 2013 printed list. The error was spotted before any plants were sent out, no-one has received the wrong plant. The Jim Archibald collection number listed here is JJA.590.625 and this was offered by Jim as lineata and our stock is lineata.
It seems that errors have plagued this plant as Jim raised this from seed he received as Iris stolonifera from material collected in Tajikistan. It is indeed stoloniferous but has smaller, thinner rhizomes than the allied stolonifera and the blue-bearded, darker segments of the flowers are more pointed. It makes 30cm tall stems and flower about a month earlier. It is said to be less vigorous, but I see no evidence of that and it is no more difficult than stolonifera, in a sunny, well-drained, loam soil. Feeding gives good results.
The species was merged with darwasica by Dykes but kept separate by Brian Mathew and as the variation of these species is unknown, their occurrences are few and any taxonomic revision would be pure speculation.
First offered 2013.
