Description
A widespread Himalayan species but one which seems to be found only rarely in cultivation. It grows from fat rhizomes which look nothing like the other Evansia Iris species but these rhizomes perennate and grow well for us.
The 75cm flower stem is slender and branched and bears flowers for several weeks, covering May to July. The 8cm flowers are a lovely light violet-purple shade in our form (raised from Chris Chadwell seed). They have both mottling and deeper purple on the falls with undulate edges and superb fringed, yellow style crests.
Hardy here and happy in a well drained, humus-rich soil in light shade or full sun. A tolerant plant, though I would avoid very hot, dry conditions as it flowers best in cooler, peaty/leafy soils.
The original stock was raised from CC.3333 (Chris Chadwell) seed though subsequently it is propagated from seed of this stock also (the only stock that we grow or have ever grown).
