Description

The typical species is a magnificent dwarf Oncocyclus species ideal for growth in cultivation. The 4cm falls are quite small compared to the standards, but they are a of delicious, velvety-purple with a dense beard of black-purple along the crest. The base of the falls usually has a slight veining visible, of purple over a small white ground. The standards, by contrast, are large, to 10cm, white but so densely dotted and strongly veined blue all over that they appear a violet-blue. The whole plant, with tiny, tidy, sickle-shaped leaves sits at only 10-20cm tall.

It might, perhaps, maybe do well outside in a very well-drained sunny spot, dry in summer, though for long-term success this is best grown in a bulb frame or pot and not subjected to the British weather or too much summer rain.

As we have several, inter-fertile (but self-sterile) clonal stocks. We may offer a different clone of these each year, depending on growth. The description remains the same for each species only the clone may vary and they all stem from the same original stock.
