Description

Lilium bakerianum is a variable species with several well defined geographical colour forms. This one has a hanging, conical flower with a green base and petals of pale to deep yellow with some spotting on the inside, towards the petal tips. The outer petals reflex upwards as the flower opens, the outer three rather more so than the inners.

Distinct from the darker and more spotted delavayi, which inclines more towards reddish shades. The colour scale is a sliding one gradually transitioning from one subspecies to the other though aureum is usually a brighter and more of a chrome yellow as opposed to the more burnished shades of delavayi.

Happy in garden conditions in a lightly shaded spot with leaf soil and plenty of both moisture and humidity when in leaf, though this likes to be virtually dry in winter, when dormant.
