Description

A small Turks-cap species, which reliably makes fabulous flowers of pale purple, stippled and dotted carmine. As the common name of “Nodding Lily” implies these are hanging and each raceme bears up to 15 flowers which open in sequence in summer, on stems 45-60 cm high. The flowers are strongly and pleasantly perfumed.

The foliage is tidy, narrow and grass-like serving to enhance the flowers rather than mask them. A stem rooting species, native to Asia with a range extending from Korea to Manchuria.

This has a long history in cultivation, it is readily grown in a humus-enriched, loam soil in half shade and is lime-tolerant.
