Description
(syn. Leopoldia comosa)
A plant that you either love or hate, but one so characteristic of the Mediterranean.
Fat bulbs make glaucous leaves and a 30-50 cm tall spike of flowers, blue in the bud but opening to yellow-edged brown. The unopened buds make a dense navy blue crown with a tuft of vivid bright blue sterile flowers sitting above to attract attention to the business below (if you are a pollinator anyway).
This likes a deep, well-drained loam in sun. It likes a dry summer rest and is best planted and left undisturbed to attain size, it does not make offsets as a rule.
Originally traceable to AH.9907, Milete, Turkey.
