Description

Pale primrose to cream hoop-petticoat flowers with a disproportionately larger, shallow, flaring and almost translucent trumpet. The stamens and style both protrude considerably from the corona. The flowers are accompanied by slender foliage and are borne through the winter months. We find this intermediate between the slightly larger bulbocodium relatives, such as albidus and the tiny species such as hedraeanthus, though like the latter it does incline its flower stems at about 45º. The flowers of paucinervis are small however though they are still about twice the size of our hedraeanthus.

Best under glass but this is only because it is where it can be appreciated, it is miniature and early;from January on into March. It is cold-hardy here and it is both robust and a good grower when it likes the site. All of this despite its north African home.

Well drained, fertile, loam-based compost and additional feeding though not essential, will build size and flower numbers. Dry in summer though not baked silly.

Please note that this form has very small bulbs, it’s just the way the plant is, a fully flowering sized bulb is only 5-6mm in diameter.
