Description
A superb, miniature Spanish species in which the flowers have broad petals and a shallow cup all of chrome-yellow in sideways-facing clusters, over thin grassy leaves, all with an overpoweringly strong scent. One to three flowers are normal on each stem.
Happy outside here in a raised sunny bed, flowering dependably in this clone which is not prone to splitting as some are. Sunny site with good drainage, lime or acid soils seem equally suitable in cultivation. This can also be grown in pots or pans, under alpine glass though it does, in these conditions, seem to like more water in Spring than many other miniature species, perhaps in keeping with its seasonally spring-wet wild habitats, where it is becoming increasingly rare. Under glass like this, it is best to plunge the pots and shelter them also from excess, prolonged, summer heat which can encourage division at the expense of flowers.
