Description
(Narcissus pseudonarcissus primigenius, Narcissus fontqueri)
Though I have seen this described as a large species, that is most certainly not the case for this stock, which makes lovely, quite small flowers in March. These are made with the short, narrow leaves and many of the blooms present slightly bicoloured petals (fading to pale yellow towards the tips) around a darker yellow trumpet. You can gauge flower size from the hand in the photograph. The bulbs are correspondingly small.
Cool, leafy spoils in part shade seem to suit this well, good drainage is appreciated, as it is for almost all bulbs but moisture retentive soil combined with this is best of all.
Limited to cooler, damper areas of n.w. Spain, primigenius has, in its time been a variety, a subspecies and is now considered a good species.
