Description
Strongly nutmeg-scented flowers, of rich pink, on medium sized plants with attractive, deeply veined and embossed, shiny green leaves. Flowering is early in the Paeonia season, in April. Slightly more compact than the more commonly seen, and related, veitchii but with flowers which are as large or even slightly larger.
These are lovely, flowering-sized cultivated plants (not mis-named Chinese imports) which make a superb show here every spring, scenting the air for yards around.
A native of the mountains of central and southwester China, in Yunnan and Szechuan especially but also in mountains woodlands in adjacent provinces, at up to 2,700 m according to the Flora of China. Readily grown in the garden in full sun and fully hardy here over many years.
