Description
This grows to about 30 cm tall with a whorl of petiolate leaves and a greenish-yellow flower, with a dark central boss. This is composed of anthers, which have a characteristic fleshy brown “knob” on the tip. They look like spiders’ eyes and instantly identify this species. The petals are threadlike and green-yellow, the sepals are broad and green.
It may not be everyone’s idea of beauty but I find this plant fascinating, different and attractive. Easily grown in a well-drained, yet moisture retentive, humus-rich soil in light shade.
