Description
This is the type species which is quite a dwarf plant, just some 20-25 cm tall. It has broad, almost overlapping, jade-green sepals. The central boss is wide, spreading and it stands out as very obvious, looking like a collection of shining ebony pin-heads jammed into a tiny embroidery hoop.
In comparison to the other subspecies this has very narrow yellowish petals which are slightly shorter and their paler colouring is very different and quite diagnostic. Indeed the two subspecies look very different, even though descriptions of their differences may seem slight on paper.
Excellent in the garden in ‘woodsey’ conditions of half-shade, humus rich soil and cool humidity and in time it will make an impressive focal point.
