Description

A fabulous new variegated Polygonatum discovered on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido some years ago.

It emerges through the ground in spring as a yellow shoot that unfurls to a leafy stem clothed with vivid sulphur yellow and green foliage. The clone holds its yellow colour right through the season. The yellow usually occupies at least half of each leaf sometimes more. Even the green parts of the leaf (which the plant needs to photosynthesise and stay alive) are flecked and speckled with yellow (and no, it’s not virused)! Please note that the young foliage is naturally more green than that of the mature plants.

This is very attractive, conspicuous and eye-catching and a real accent plant. The Japanese name ‘Dai koga‘ means ‘Great Yellow River’

Best under semi-woodland conditions of half-shade or dappled light but not difficult to grow. It is however slow to increase and divide, perhaps as so much of each leaf is yellow and up until a few years ago this fetched hundreds of dollars per plant in Japan.
