Description

A superb rare perennial woodlander endemic to Japan. The vividly green foliage looks just like that of a small, clumping fern and you would never guess that this is in fact from the Poppy family, even when the 15-20 cm tall stems of pure white hanging bell-flowers are produced in June. These hang on thin and wiry pedicels from the stem along which they are spread.

The overall feel of this plant is ‘elegance’ – it just has that undeniable class and grace.

Said to be evergreen, this is almost true, the old leaves start to die away in late October but remain, partially intact until late winter before new ones are produced in early Spring. There is thus a window when we can send leafless (or almost leafless) plants, which will soon grow fresh foliage in spring though plants will move happily either side of this time also.

Leafy loam in half shade is ideal and this makes a super companion plant for Trillium and other choice woodlanders.
