Description

(syn. palustris)

Superb deep, bright red flowers of a very intense shade on hairy stems alongside very hairy, bright-green leaves. The whole effort is no more than 8-10 cm tall and is very slender in appearance. Delightfully the flowers are the most intense red-pink of all of the Rhodohypoxis and are also among the largest. The plant itself, being derived from a different species to the bulk of the baurii forms in commerce, is different and distinctive.

It entered cultivation some years ago via the late Don Mann of the Forge Nursery, in Essex and our stock is Don’s form which you may see listed with or without the name “Donald Mann”

This grows happily outside and seems remarkably hardy in a sunny site. As long ago as 1986, we were frozen for a period in excess of 8 weeks, bottoming out (that year) at -10°C and this plant emerged unscathed. Planted 4 cm deep in a very peaty or humus-rich, acidic soil with good drainage provided by coarse sand or grit it has proven to be the easiest of the species, increasing nicely by means of short stolons and flowering well from April to September.
