Description

Probably the largest of the Old World species and certainly the only yellow one. I have seen it described as European, but it in fact grows in both Turkey and Syria.

It makes large yellow funnels, with a darker throat ring, in abundance, very early in the year and this stock is raised from the best, award-winning, Antalya forms which were found in damp meadows rather than the “sandy soils” often ascribed to the species. Floriferous and long blooming making its flowers on notably wiry stems that both carry and display them well. This is the only wholly yellow, northern hemisphere species and it is valuable not only for its unique colouring, but for its ease of growth. We have it potted but plunged in unheated, outside frames and it does well there in a well-drained, loam-based bulb compost.

Raised from a Jimmy Persson collection, JP.87-81
