Description

A little known species from the eastern Mediterranean, specifically Cyprus and parts of Turkey, with flowers of violet, veering one way to deep violet and the other to a paler, but still intense, violet. The throat darkens at the petal base to an even deeper shade before abruptly shading to white, via a gold band of variable width. In the very centre is a small central boss of bright yellow anthers with the style protruding quite a way beyond (quite a way for a Romulea that is). The end of the style is divided and further dissected into feathery divisions, stained with purple. The protrusion of the style well beyond the anthers seems to be a rare feature in Romulea, shared only between a very few species.

The flowers sit on short, very stiff stems, almost at ground level. A superb little plant of an unique and intense colouring. Ideal in a pot or pan, but hardy enough to go outside in a sunny, gritty, well-drained spot. Raised from an Eduard J Hanslik collection made in Milas province, S. W. Turkey at 1,400 m. many years ago. Naturally tiny, but flowering sized corms.
