Description
A native of Yunnan with broad bright green leaves below good-sized and attractive flowers of bright, more or less unbroken purple, produced in an intense flush, early in the Roscoea season. The flowers are unruffled and look very “smooth” in appearance, in contrast to many species.
We are using this name, the correct botanical one according to Jill Cowley’s monograph, to distinguish our stocks as this is raised from a seed collection made in Lijiang. It bears slightly darker, more uniformly coloured flowers than the common horticultural forms, which is, in a way, surprising, as this is from an area where the plant’s variability has given rise to several names for the various colour forms and combinations.
Easy in a sunny spot, planted in a moist, well-drained, humus rich soil, but very tolerant.
