Description
(botanical types)
This is the true and correctly-named plant and NOT R. auriculata (which often does the rounds under this name).
The species is very variable and it can have flowers of light to dark purple, sometimes these are slightly striped towards the base of the flower or the lip, sometimes the marks can be white, or there may be both light and dark markings, as shown in our (very old) photograph. The flowers are borne over strong but narrow leaves that can sometimes take on a bronze flush.
A very readily grown, easily flowered and obliging species, perhaps the best to start with as it is very easy out in the garden needing little attention or special treatments, rewarding this minimal attention with good flowers nevertheless.
