Description
This is the single-flowered form with delicate, pure white flowers with 8-10 petals, in March and April. These have lovely yellow centres, the whole being carried on a 10 cm stem. The flower buds appear with the young leaves furled around them, and these young leaves serve to protect the bud. Indeed they furl around the bud in the evening and during cold weather.
Later in the season (May-June) these leaves expand to blue-green parasols some 20cm, or more. These last until autumn. The reverse of the normally white petals is normally stained either pale grey-blue or pale pink. There is some variation in the intensity and longevity of this ephemeral colour, with some forms being named according to their perceived colour.
