Description

Numerous, bright yellow funnels starting in September but lasting as late as the first days of December if the bubs are late planted. The flowers are shaped like a miniature Sternbergia lutea but they are held upright to slightly sideways, on long tubes. The capsules are held in a sideways position from October until they finally ripen in March. We increase this stock by seed here and by growing on the pea-sized offsets which are made on the end of short stolons.

This is a miniature form, smaller than most S. greuteriana usually encountered and is one of our smallest forms. It is akin in size to Lee Martin’s clone (though our Crete stock is NOT clonaI) though it sets prolific seed which breeds true to size if it is not inter-pollinated with anything larger. This is probably the fabled plant described some years back as S. minoica, though I can see nothing to differentiate that small “species” from any of the other forms within the continuous spectrum of size range of S. greuteriana.

Sunny, well drained loam soil, dry in summer and recorded as hardy to -12°C. Also a superb pot subject for the alpine house.
