Description
Numerous, bright yellow funnels peaking in September but often lasting sporadically until October, shaped like a miniature Sternbergia lutea but they are held on long tubes. Increase is by division of the main bulbs as well as by the production of pea-sized offsets made on the end of short stolons.
Sunny, well drained loam soil, dry in summer and recorded as hardy to -12°C. This is also a superb subject for the alpine house where the comparatively small bulbs can be packed into a pan for a fantastic display. Though mostly dwarf, this material exhibits a degree of variation, from small (mostly) to flowers closer to the size of S. sicula (but rarely).
This is the true plant, propagated from a stock found originally on Karpathos. We acquired this from the German grower and botanist, the late Manfred Koenen, many years ago.
