Description
This is a quietly lovely, Japanese and Himalayan species. Three broad plain green leaves appear early in the year at the same time as the almost horizontal, (slightly nodding) pure white flowers. As they age these take on a pale pink tinge, then later still a pale violet colouration.
Readily grown and remarkably hardy for a plant that flowers very early in the Trillium season.
A native of deciduous woodlands in the cooler areas of Japan, this revels in a deep, leaf- or humus-rich soil in part shade. Our original stock came from Aomori prefecture in Northern Honshu and is a lovely, strong growing strain. This makes the largest flowers of the Japanese forms that we have so far encountered, although this is naturally not a large species. The ovaries of this strain often have small purple marks at their tips.
