Description

(Sweet Beth)

Very large flowers with notably broad and recurving petals. Although the flowers are often called ‘hanging’, they are usually held stiffly on a downwards-facing stalk, they do not hang loosely. Because of their large size and rich colouring, they are conspicuous and not hidden.

In this form however, rather than being held downwards, the flowers are held stiffly sideways. We also find a distinct tendency for the flowers to be infused with a more brick red shade, rather than the usual ruby-red.

Contrasting cream to yellow pollen completes the visual appeal and the blooms are also sweetly scented, hence the American vernacular name of “Sweet Beth”.

This is the largest of the garden species and is a very good Trillium indeed, combining large flowers, good colour, sweet scent and a strong constitution. Like all Trillium it takes a few years to give its very best, perhaps all the more so as it is a larger species that needs time (and patience) while it gets its root system established.
