Description

Tritonia crocata is a very striking, winter-growing species of Tritonia, producing masses of flowers in May-June, earlier in warmer climates. The flowers are made in spikes, above a fan of short, lance-shaped leaves and are self-coloured and un-veined. They are in shades of flame-red, orange or red-orange. Each petal has translucent margins.

It is free-flowering and makes an ideal pot subject. Though found on clay soils in its native South Africa, it grows very well, in a sharply-drained, loam-based compost, increasing well by both offsets and seed.

Full sun is best. Like all Tritonia, the foliage is not likely to survive prolonged periods of freezing or frosting though it will take transient coldness and light frosts. Once dormant in summer the foliage is best cut (not pulled) and the plant not disturbed too much to allow it to establish.
