Description

This is a native of Chile considered half-hardy in the UK but this is hardy here down to almost freezing (especially if kept on the dry side) in a sheltered spot, planted deeply (below frost level). It’s hardiness may be worthy of further experimentation. It has a small, potato-like tuber (smaller than the related tricolor) which makes thread-like growths in early autumn followed by gorgeous yellow flowers which completely cover the clover-like foliage in the early spring.

It likes bright light in a well-drained, but cool, moist root run and the word ‘cool’ is crucial, as they will go into dormancy if you warm them up above about 20°C. Good feeding will increase tuber size and numbers dramatically.
