Description
(sometimes seen as hoogiana late form)
The original stock of what was to become Tulipa hoogiana was collected by Dr Boris Fedtschenko in the Kopet Dag of Turkmenistan, in 1910. It found its way to Holland and was named for the brothers Hoog. Our stock bulbs of the true species are direct descendants of that stock, from the Hoog family who have preserved this original stock in cultivation. It is these bulbs that we have offered over the years (with a crop of only 5-10 annually) and our stock is true to name.
Since the original introduction a second form of so-called hoogiana has appeared in cultivation and that form been raised by the thousand in the Netherlands. That plant is in fact a mis-named stock of Tulipa persica. This is referred to, in a paper, in the March 2022 International Rock Gardener. The authors however refer to all Tulipa hoogiana of horticulture, as being T. persica however this is not correct, as not all plants in horticulture are of that misnamed stock. The original stock is not T. persica, it is in fact T. hoogiana the two are not the same it is just the mass produced Dutch stock that is wrongly named.
As we do not propose to offer this misnamed stock, it is not for sale, there is no waitlist available for this item.
