Description
A fabulous double which has been known on and off in gardens for over 100 years, since its discovery in Ireland, by James Hill Poë at Riverston in 1911. Known to Bowles it was maintained in cultivation by D. Shackleton and the Giant Snowdrop Company.
It makes erect, glaucous foliage with a slightly folded margin that is sometimes evident on one leaf only. Late in the Snowdrop season, sometimes into March, it produces large, neat and evenly formed flowers with a regularly-formed, well-packed inner frill, one of the neatest of all of the doubles. Depending on vigour and establishment, the outer whorl consists of 5, or rarely 6, broad segments (3-4 in most other doubles).
Awarded a PC in 1974 and an AM in 1979 this is a robust and excellent plant, apparently proposed for the highest award of all, an AGM, though I do not know of the outcome of this proposition.
