Description

Asarum sakawanum has larger flowers than many species with longer petals which are more widely separated. This clone Gosho Nishiki (we think this name translates as ‘Imperial Brocade’) has nicely patterned leaves which are well marked with one main, broad zone of silver subtended by splashes of silvery green over a darker ground.

Though the leaves are very good (and held well above the flowers) is clone is grown mainly for its deep ruby-red flower colour. The colouring is brighter and much more inclined to red than is the case in the normally red-brown or most often deep- or chocolate-brown shades of the flower in the unselected species . In addition, the petals in this clone are a contrasting whitish-yellow and the whole is set around a deep and dark mouth opening, ringed with concentric, whitish folds. It is worth mentioning that this one keeps it colours behind a cloak, in that the exterior of the flower is a pale, greyish- or yellowish-white, giving no clue about the coloured interior of the blooms.

The flower is a good size and the floral tube  (set behind the petals) is likewise, quite substantial.
