Description

Beautifully mottled, zoned and clouded, strongly heart-shaped leaves, each 10-12cm long, by 6-8cm wide are made in abundance on clumps that can reach 30cm across in time (and if left undivided)!

The flowers on Kanzan are individually quite large and, having lost almost all of their colour, they are almost entirely green, with just the slightest suggestion of chestnut-brown close to the mouth. Rather than spoiling an otherwise green flower, this provides just the right amount of contrast to differentiate the opening to the mouth.

The wild species is native to Kyushu, in Japan, where it is considered rare however this is a selected, horticultural clone.

Not difficult under standard conditions for the genus, in a well -drained but humus-rich, fertile compost in part shade and this seems to do quite well when grown outside. However it is also happy grown under alpine glass if you prefer to have undamaged foliage and pristine flowers.

Introduced to our lists December 2019
