Description

Asarum takaoi is widespread across the Japanese Islands and correspondingly it is both variable and easily grown.

It is evergreen and makes clumps with a slightly running habit. The foliage is green or may rarely be patterned in zones on the upper surface. Asarum takaoi Variegata is a clonal selection of a good, well-patterned leaf form that we are offering here.  The small, rounded patterned leaves, are remarkably reminiscent of hardy Ϲyclamen, especially C. cilicium, the only difference being that the Asarum leaves are fragrant when bruised!

This makes excellent small-scale ground cover in light shade where it is easy, hardy and comfortingly vigorous without being rampant.

The flowers are medium sized, carunculated brown and purple triangular tubes with a wide “mouth”, which sit in clumps below the leaves in early spring.

The plant offered austrokiiense alba is a newly acquired clone from Japan, with pale, limpid green-white flowers, totally unlike the normal dark forms. We are working on a picture for you.
