Description
A new species from Kuh-e Sendan Dagh in Iran. This was described by Janis Ruksans after the printing of his monumental Crocus monograph “The World of Crocuses” and so it is not included within that.
We have only a deep purple form (our stock came from Janis himself) and he describes it as having whitish flowers with a dark basal blotch and only one median dark stripe, however other illustrations show darker flowers as well as paler ones.
So far, like Janis, we have grown this only in pots, but it makes a good display in February. Janis suggests that as it comes from quite high altitudes (2,100m – 2,400m) so it could be growable in a suitable spot in the open garden, though in it’s natural habitats it is a snow-melt species and it experiences a long cold and dry winter and a hot, dry summer both factors which should be borne in mind.
Named for John Ingham who first spotted it in the wild.
