Description

(Crocus biflorus tauri)

A name which has been widely applied to many forms of what seemed to be a variable species, but which has now been divided into several new species! The very name itself is confused and misapplied. The species is however most definitely distinct from C. tauricus, from Crimea.

This stock is the usual form long grown under this name in commerce. It is suspected (but not in any way proven) of being hybrid. Whatever its taxonomic status it is a very intensely coloured rich, deep blue-violet plant, the blooms each with a small yellow throat and short stiff upright leaves. Readily grown and propagated vegetatively, though seemingly seed-sterile (or self-incompatible).

Stands out from a long way away in the garden (where it grows readily) and just as good close to.
