Description
This is said to be the largest flowered of all of the “spiky”. It may not always look huge upon opening, but with time, as the days advance, the flower gets larger and also unfurls more. The plant and leaves also, gradually get taller, though neither differ markedly from ordinary nivalis.
The flower itself does differ, a great deal and it is a tufted double in which the outers and the inners resemble each other. There are many, long, narrow petals which are varyingly striped with green. The plant is, not surprisingly, sterile as all of the flower’s sexual parts have mutated into petals.
This seems to be the most vigorous and easily grown of all of the “spikies” and early experience is that it increases well when happy.
First found by Robert Marshall at Alburgh in Suffolk in 1993.
