Description
(Galanthus elwesii Don Armstrong)
Galanthus Don Armstrong is a big, bold, much sought-after snowdrop with much presence. Big, broad glaucous leaves and large flowers.
It is a strong-growing form of G. elwesii with large and very lovely poculiform flowers, meaning that the inners have developed the form of the outers. They have also lost their green markings and evolved a much greater size. What you get is a 6-petalled, pure white Snowdrop rather than the usual 3+3 arrangement. This flower form is of course known, rarely, in G. nivalis, but to have it in the larger and more robust G. elwesii is quite something.
In warmth and with with increasing floral maturity the petals flex right back, becoming almost horizontal.
This is very nice indeed and aptly described by a fellow-grower as “a bobby dazzler of a ‘drop”, this originated in British Columbia and is named apparently for a Canadian gardener.
