Description
The various cultivars of the autumn-flowering Galanthus reginae–olgae are still mostly very new and even more scarce. This one originated with Joe Sharman and it was initially named in honour of Ruby Baker. Unfortunately the cultivar name “Ruby Baker” was already in use and could not be applied to two different plants. The re-naming of this form of reginae-olgae as “Ruby’s Green Dream” is an attempt to limit the resulting confusion where two different plants shared one name.
It is early flowering, even for the autumnal reginae-olgae and normally starts to bloom from around late September or so, but has lasted here until (just) November. The flowers are made along with the beautifully silver-striped leaves of the species.
Ruby’s Green Dream is a virescent form, the outer petals are infused and marked with green and this external green colouring is unusual in reginae–olgae. The green is not powerful but it is a nice light jade.
Also pleasing is the fact that it is a reasonable do-er.
