Description

Short stems, 15 cm tall topped with 6 cm flowers which in this form are often tinted with orange, rather than just being the classic yellow that this plant is known for. Despite the distinct colouring, the flowers still show the typical, hairy, crest characteristic of this Juno section species.

Flowering is early. Sharply drained compost in a deep pot under glass is good, although old records, from when it gained its AM in 1901, suggest that it could be grown outside – perhaps when you have an offset to ‘risk’. If you keep it under glass then give plenty of water as the growth emerges, and abundant air circulation. If you try it outside, try a very well-drained site (a raised bed maybe) and make sure it gets a dry summer rest.

Unusually the (thin) perennial roots in this species shrivel away each summer. Please don’t expect tap roots on these bulbs, the species does not have them when dormant!
