Description
A new species of the reticulata section from the Zagros Mountains of Western Iran, originally described by Brian Mathew and Mehdi Zarrei.
Iris zagrica is notable for having a very long flower stalk, in contrast it has almost no flower tube. Pale sky blue standards with a darker central zone sit above powerfully veined, imperial purple falls which have a central orange crest.
Uniquely, if seed is set then the seed pods are raised well above the ground on the flower stalk.
Plants introduced in 2011 under the name of Iris zagrica and bearing the collection number of EGO.IQ129 have subsequently been declared to be a new species and named as Iris zetterlundii but please note that Iris zagrica is still a valid name and a distinct species.
We are not currently growing the true Iris zagrica. This page is left only for information.
